WSSU YAC celebrates ‘Forty Under 40’ inductees

2017 Forty Under 40 inductees raised $30,000 for student scholarships.

The Winston-Salem State University Young Alumni Council celebrated young alumni and raised money for WSSU students at the Forty Under 40 Alumni Awards Gala on Saturday, April 8, at the Benton Convention Center.

The event recognized young alumni who “have gone above and beyond WSSU’s expectations to ‘Depart to Serve.’“ The honorees, graduates from 1999-10, also gave back to WSSU, raising $30,000 for WSSU scholarships as part of their induction.

Speakers at the event were WSSU Chancellor Elwood L. Robinson and Derwin L. Montgomery ’10, a Winston-Salem City Council member. Photos from the event are available on WSSU’s Flickr page.

Student, faculty member honored with King ‘Building the Dream’ Award

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., two members of the Ramily were recognized during a joint program of Winston-Salem State University and Wake Forest University on the official federal holiday honoring the civil rights icon. Student Nia James and faculty member Maestra D’Walla Simmons-Burke were the 2025 honorees.
