Appointments announced within WSSU’s School of Health Sciences

Winston-Salem State University’s School of Health Sciences (SOHS) has announced the appointment of two veteran faculty members to lead departments.

Department of Clinical Laboratory Science

Dr. Georgia McCauley has been appointed chair of the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science. Dr. McCauley brings more than 40 years of experience as a certified medical technologist, including 20 years of laboratory management experience. 

She joined WSSU in 2003 and has served as program director since 2008. Under her leadership, the program has maintained ongoing national accreditation. She has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and received grants to support student scholarships. 

She replaces Dr. George Harwell, who retired during the last academic year.

Department of Occupational Therapy

Dr. Cynthia Bell has been appointed chair of the Department of Occupational Therapy, effective Jan. 1. Dr. Bell has over 20 years of experience as an occupational therapist. She is an active member of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) and serves on the national AOTA Volunteer Leadership Development Committee and has been the North Carolina representative to the AOTA Representative Assembly. She is active with the North Carolina Occupational Therapy Association (NCOTA) board and has served in a variety of capacities.

Dr. Bell will replace Dr. Dorothy Bethea, who will retire at the end of the year after nearly 20 years of service to WSSU. Under Dr. Bethea’s leadership the Master of Science in Occupational Therapy was established. She has been instrumental in facilitating a community-engaged curriculum that promotes service learning.

Dr. Peggy Valentine announced the appointments in a letter to faculty on Aug. 14.
