Six Winston-Salem State students accepted into master-level athletic training programs
WSSU makes history with current number of admissions
Six students from Winston-Salem State University’s Sports Medicine Department have been accepted into Master of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) programs at various universities, resulting in history-making admissions for two of the students and for WSSU.
The MSAT program prepares entry-level professionals to enter the field of athletic training by completing a certain amount of required coursework to satisfy eligibility requirements for the National Board of Certification examination.
“The Department of Health, Physical Education and Sport Studies developed the sports medicine concentration and minor to meet the needs of increasing diversity in the field of athletic training,” said Dr. Cynthia Willams Brown, interim associate dean for Education, Quality Assurance, and Community Engagement. “Additionally, there was strong interest in the program. The statistics show that a little over 9% of athletic trainers are African American. Our head athletic trainer has been working diligently to develop partnerships that provide our students with graduate opportunities, and we are extremely excited to see the benefits as we do our part to increase the diversity in the athletic training workforce.”
The six WSSU students are:
- Jadyn Myrick – UNC-Wilmington;
- Lauryn Hoskins – High Point University;
- Sierra Agnew – High Point University;
- Jacqueline Velazquez – Western Carolina University;
- Trinity Cervantes – Northern Arizona University; and
- Zakiyah Payne – Huntington College.
