WSSU to host hip-hop legend Pete Rock for Black History Month event

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) will host legendary hip-hop artist and producer Pete Rock as the featured guest speaker for its annual Black History Month celebration. The event, titled “The Miseducation of…”, will take place at 7 p.m. on Thursday, February 13, in Dillard Auditorium on the WSSU campus.

“The Miseducation of…” honors the legacy of Carter G. Woodson, the founder of Black History Month, by providing an educational platform to explore the rich history and contributions of Black culture. This year’s program will focus on the influence of Black music, particularly hip-hop, on American history.

Pete Rock, an acclaimed record producer, DJ, and rapper, will deliver a keynote address titled “The Miseducation of … Hip-Hop Music’s Contribution to American History.” Recognized as one of the greatest hip-hop producers of all time, Pete Rock rose to prominence in the early 1990s as one half of the critically acclaimed duo, Pete Rock & CL Smooth. His pioneering work in merging jazz elements with hip-hop has played a pivotal role in shaping the genre known as jazz rap.

In addition to Pete Rock’s keynote discussion, the event will feature a dynamic panel including past participants of “The Miseducation of…” series. The panel will offer diverse perspectives on the impact of Black music and culture throughout history.

This program is part of a series of events, sponsored by University Student Activities and Engagement, scheduled throughout February in observance of Black History Month at WSSU. For a full schedule of events, please refer to the flyers below.
