WSSU joins United Nations' global sustainability network

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) has announced its acceptance into the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), a prestigious global initiative dedicated to advancing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Dr. Nikolaos Karagiannis, professor of economics, and Dr. Shawn Holt, associate provost for research and innovation, directed the effort that led to this achievement.

Launched by the United Nations in 2012, the SDSN mobilizes scientific, technological and financial expertise from more than 1,900 member institutions, including universities, think tanks, businesses and governments, to accelerate progress toward solving the world’s most pressing challenges.

Membership in this dynamic network places WSSU among a global community committed to research, education, policy innovation and practical solutions for sustainable development.

“This milestone reflects our deep commitment to preparing students, faculty and the broader community to lead in sustainable and socially responsible ways,” said Dr. Kenny Holt, dean of the College of Business & Entrepreneurship. “Joining the SDSN amplifies our ability to collaborate globally, contribute meaningfully to the SDGs, and elevate our research and educational initiatives.”

As a member of SDSN, WSSU will gain:

  • access to a vast network of global experts and institutions focused on sustainable development.
  • opportunities for joint research, policy analysis and solution-driven initiatives.
  • enhanced visibility for its SDG-related work on a worldwide platform.
  • educational resources through the SDG Academy, including free online courses and materials.
  • professional development and leadership training for students via the SDSN Youth program.
  • collaborative funding opportunities for sustainability-focused projects.

Membership in SDSN also opens doors for students and faculty to engage in global webinars, training sessions and networking opportunities that build skills and foster innovation. Through this partnership, WSSU continues to position itself as a leader in integrating sustainability into business education and community impact.

WSSU’s inclusion in SDSN underscores the university’s dedication to shaping a resilient and sustainable future. By aligning with this global movement, WSSU reaffirms its role as a catalyst for change – locally and globally.
