WSSU financial outlook upgraded by S&P Global Rating

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) has received a vote of confidence in its financial strength. S&P Global Ratings has upgraded the university’s outlook from stable to positive and affirmed its strong bond ratings, signaling continued growth and sound fiscal management.

This improved outlook positions the university favorably for future borrowing, enabling greater financial flexibility to invest in capital projects such as new academic buildings, campus renovations, and infrastructure improvements. A stronger outlook may also allow WSSU to secure lower borrowing costs, freeing up additional resources to support its mission and students.

S&P affirmed the university’s strong A- and BBB+ bond ratings and cited WSSU’s increasing enrollment and consistent financial surpluses as key reasons for the improved outlook. In simple terms, the university is managing its finances well, attracting more students, and keeping its budget balanced year after year.

“The positive outlook from S&P Global Ratings reinforces the strength of WSSU’s financial foundation,” said Jeremy AlltopChief Operating Officer of Winston-Salem State University. “This recognition enhances our ability to invest strategically in our campus and continue providing an exceptional educational experience for our students.”

S&P noted that continued stability in enrollment and financial performance could lead to a future rating upgrade, which would further expand WSSU’s ability to plan and finance major projects.

The university’s strong financial stewardship reflects its ongoing commitment to responsible growth, operational excellence, and long-term sustainability in support of WSSU’s mission to prepare students to “Enter to Learn. Depart to Serve.”
