WSSU alumnus, John Burton Jr., delivers TEDx Talk on redefining excellence

Winston-Salem State University distinguished alumnus, John Burton Jr., Class of 1998 and 2025 Alumni Achiever Award recipient, delivered a compelling TEDx Talk for TEDxMallard Creek.

Burton’s talk, “True Excellence Isn’t the Absence of Flaws but the Presence of Grace,”  confronts one of the most pervasive misconceptions in modern culture: The belief that excellence and perfection are the same. Speaking with clarity, humor and clinical insight, Burton argues that perfectionism is not a prerequisite for greatness but often a barrier to it.

“True excellence isn’t about flawless execution,” Burton says in his talk. “It’s about the courage to show up fully – even with imperfections – rooted in grace, authenticity and purpose.”

A prolific speaker, clinical faith-based therapist, leadership strategist and self-described “unofficial WSSU recruiter,” Burton continues to elevate the profile of Winston-Salem State University on national and global stages. His TEDx appearance further solidifies his reputation as an emerging thought leader in mental health, personal growth and resilience.

Blending professional expertise with personal narrative, he takes audiences on a journey through the psychological traps of perfectionism, the emotional fatigue it creates and the liberating power of embracing grace-driven excellence. His message has already begun resonating with leaders, students, creatives and clinicians seeking a healthier path to achievement.

With over two decades of experience spanning clinical therapy, pastoral counseling, leadership coaching and organizational wellness, Burton is the founder of The Burton Group PR, a strategic marketing communications consulting firm. He also maintains a private practice at A Talk with John Counseling and Consulting, where he provides executive coaching, workplace wellness solutions and faith-integrated therapeutic support to high-performing professionals.

Burton’s professional portfolio includes clinical faith-based therapy specializing in perfectionism, burnout and identity development; corporate leadership and resilience training; keynote speaking; youth and collegiate mentorship; and mental health curriculum design.

As a 2025 Alumni Achiever Award recipient, Burton has been recognized for his outstanding professional excellence and his extraordinary commitment to the WSSU community. He frequently returns to campus to engage with students, attend university events and champion the legacy of WSSU.

He has personally guided 12 students to the university, mentoring them through the application process and their academic journeys. Two of those students are currently enrolled in WSSU’s highly competitive Doctor of Physical Therapy program, one of the university’s most respected doctoral offerings.

Burton’s advocacy has strengthened WSSU’s pipeline of future scholars, affirming his role as both champion and ambassador of the university.
