WSSU Opens a State-of-the Art Living-Learning Community
Living on campus has multiple benefits: enhancing academic success, enriching the student experience and encouraging persistence to graduation. In fall 2018, WSSU welcomed 300 freshmen to the H. Douglas Covington Residence Hall. This living-learning community features common areas for academic and co-curricular events. The building has a seminar room, computer lab, study rooms, and an academic research center. William Gibson, WSSU’s 2018-19 Student Government Association president said, “Living on campus means being a part of a community that supports your educational pursuits in all areas of development.”

ENHANCE QUALITY OF GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS

WSSU’s Graduate Programs Receive $2.4 Million Boost

A $2.4 million federal grant is aiming to increase the number of African Americans in STEM graduate programs at WSSU. The grant from the U.S. Department of Education HBCU Graduate Fellowship provides fellowships, tutoring, and support for students and faculty in six STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and healthcare graduate programs. The grant will strengthen graduate education, attract a diverse population of students, and help WSSU produce highly-skilled professionals for these fields.

COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL JUSTICE THROUGH ENHANCED COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

WSSU Leader in Health Equity

In 2018, WSSU launched a new minor in public health, expanded the free health services students and faculty provide at the Rams Know H.O.W. Mobile Unit, launched Weight Matters, a community and campus weight management program, and created the Public Health Society, a new student organization. WSSU also added four new undergraduate courses that focus on public health.

ENHANCE REVENUE AND STEWARDSHIP OF RESOURCES

WSSU Raises a Record $87,000 on Giving Tuesday 2018

In 2018 WSSU broke its record for one-day giving, raising more than $87,000 in 24 hours. A total of 837 alumni, faculty, staff and friends donated on Giving Tuesday to support need-based scholarships.

ENHANCE THE QUALITY OF PHYSICAL AND OPERATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE

WSSU Unveils a New 20-Year Master Plan

Architects have unveiled a long-term vision for Winston-Salem State University’s campus that supports growth and offers enhanced amenities for students. The plan proposes 1.35-million square feet of new construction, including: four new academic buildings dedicated to the sciences, renovation of existing academic buildings, construction of two new residence halls, expanded athletics facilities, and a renovated library with a new café and social spaces.
