Forsyth Medical Center Volunteer Auxiliary Board creates scholarship for nursing students

The Wayne P. Vestal Scholarship will provide $1,250 per semester for five Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students in their final year or semester of study.

The Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Volunteer Auxiliary Board has created a new scholarship for students in the Division of Nursing at Winston-Salem State University (WSSU).

The Wayne F. Vestal Scholarship will provide $1,250 per semester for five Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students in their final year or semester of study. The scholarships will first be awarded in August.

"We are always delighted with the level of support our clinical partners provide to our nursing program and our students," said Dr. Cecil Holland, associate dean and chief operating officer of nursing at WSSU. "By partnering with WSSU and the Division of Nursing, Novant Health is providing resources to educate the next generation of professional nurses and advanced practice providers. These scholarships will help to make students' dreams and professional goals a reality."

The Volunteer Auxiliary Board is providing $12,500 for the scholarship.

The scholarship, administered through WSSU’s Division of Nursing and the WSSU Foundation, will be awarded to students who:

  • Are enrolled full time in any nursing program of study and have a financial need.
  • Show academic excellence and a dedication to study.
  • Have strong desire to further their career in the health field.

The scholarship is named in memory of Wayne F. Vestal, a former Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center Volunteer Auxiliary Board member.

Nursing students who are interested in applying for scholarships should contact the Division of Nursing’s Scholarship Committee at 336-750-2272.

WSSU’s Division of Nursing, part of the School of Health Sciences, offers one of the largest and most comprehensive programs in North Carolina. For more information, please visit the Division of Nursing website.
