Institutional Assessment & Research
Institutional Assessment and Research is responsible for the collection of data from both internal and external sources and the analysis, distribution, and presentation of these data as information for use in reporting, planning, decision-making, and policy formulation at Winston-Salem State University. The office maintains and ensures the accuracy of university statistics and reports these data to governing bodies and a broad spectrum of information consumers. The office coordinates assessment activities for the institution related to institutional effectiveness.
Institutional Assessment and Research (IAR) oversees several functions of particular interest to department chairs:
- Assessment Process and Assessment Audits: Department chairs are ultimately responsible for ensuring assessment data are reported appropriately in Nuventive Improve, WSSU’s assessment management system, at both the major (student learning outcomes) and department (process outcomes) level. Department chairs are required to participate in the annual assessment audit.
- Course Evaluations: IAR works to provide department chairs with access to relevant course evaluation reports after results become available to instructors. These reports are available to department chairs through Nuventive Improve and through department-level dashboards in Qualtrics Vocalize. Please contact IAR& to have your department chair permissions activated in Vocalize.
- Data Distribution-- Lots of information, including data on students, faculty and staff, enrollment, retention and graduation rates, and completions is readily available on the Institutional Assessment & Research website. If your data needs go beyond what is readily available, you can request a WebFocus report from RAMSupport.
- Survey Development and Reporting: The IAR staff is available to assist WSSU faculty and staff with survey development, administration, and reporting. Before launching a survey, members of the campus community should consult with IAR to discuss the survey development process and data that may already be available.
Data from regularly administered internal surveys can be found on IAR’s survey page. Data from national surveys including the CIRP Freshman Survey, the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE), and the Faculty Survey of Student Engagement (FSSE) are available by contacting IAR.
