Welcome to the New Semester – Chancellor's Letter

Dear Ram Family,

Welcome to the start of a new semester! August is one of my favorite months of the year. It is a time that is filled with energy and enthusiasm. Students and faculty return to campus and a new cohort of freshmen and transfer students joins the Ram Family. The air is full of excitement as friends old and new come together in an environment that fosters intellectual curiosity and personal growth.

I often remind myself, my colleagues, and our students: we are grounded in something bigger than ourselves here. There are thousands of Rams who came before us and generations of Rams to follow. We are part of an unbroken chain that extends back 126 years to our founder, Dr. Simon Green Atkins. His vision for an institution where every student would meet the challenges of the day equipped with an education designed to intellectually prepare the “head, hand, and heart” continues to this day. I am often overwhelmed with gratitude that I get to be a part of that legacy and I am proud of the talented faculty and staff who work alongside me to provide our students the education they richly deserve.

Our students are here to achieve their dreams and to turn their goals into reality. Our job as educators, administrators, and supporters is to help them become their best selves. We have tremendous power—an awesome power, really. We must use it to help our students maximize their potential. Every single one of them deserves our very best each and every day. Let us not forget those who helped us become the men and women we are today as we support, encourage, and uplift our students.

Thank you for all that you do to make Winston-Salem State University the outstanding institution that it is. I am deeply grateful to each of you for your contributions and your dedication to our students. It is an honor to be part of such a remarkable and talented community. I look forward to welcoming newcomers and reconnecting with old friends in the coming year.

Sincerely,
Elwood L. Robinson, Ph.D.
