The Department of Health, Physical Education and Sport Studies offers outstanding academic, research, and service experiences to all students who enter our programs. Our innovative programs prepare students to assume leading roles in society, industry, and the academy. The faculty and staff strive to lead, and we believe that we produce some of the most productive student leaders as well.
Mission Statement
The Department of Health, Physical Education and Sport Studies is comprised of four academic programs that emphasize a multidisciplinary and collaborative effort. Our mission is to produce successful professionals and leaders in the fields of physical education, sport management, and motorsports management. We accomplish this mission via a demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service in a learner-centered environment enabling students to acquire understanding, knowledge, and skills necessary for establishing successful careers and becoming responsible citizens, critical thinkers and leaders who can solve problems in a complex global society.
Programs of Study
Kennette J. Burgess
International strategic marketer, community leader, and social media enthusiast, Kennette J. Burgess is a Bermudian living between NC, USA, and Bermuda with over 18 years of combined marketing and business experience, heightened by years of international business experience. She is the CEO of FOCUS Marketing & Development Solutions, which also has a clothing line Distinct Apparel. She is the winner of BEDCs 2021 Female Entrepreneur of the Year, a Best of Bermuda Awards for ‘Best 2011 Mobile App’ for a local Bermudian tourism-based app despite tough competition, ranked top 20 of Bermuda’s influential social media rankings, winner of the impressive 40 Under 40 Alumni award from Winston-Salem State University and also a winner of the prestigious Who’s Who Awards in America while she was attending WSSU. Kennette can be seen globally speaking to empower future leaders, female business owners and minority entrepreneurs to become market leaders and follow their dreams, regardless of the obstacles in their way.
For over 10 years she was the International Product [Marketing] Manager for North Carolina based one-to-one marketing and direct selling global giant Shop.com | Market America managing and launching products and opening operations globally in Australia, Europe, Canada, and Mexico. As a global celebrity marketing manager, she was responsible for managing athletic brands for celebrities such as Carmelo Anthony and wife La La Anthony, Bob Marley's son Rohan Marley (owner of Marley Coffee), Fat Joe and legend Scottie Pippen.
Bryant K. Mccorkle

Direct major recreational programs that offer a wide variety of recreational activities. Develop, manage, and direct an extensive recreational program of campus-wide scope and complexity; develop, manage, and direct campus intramural programs. Supervise and evaluate the performance of recreational and clerical personnel. Coordinate activities with local universities and outside recreational agencies. Assists in screening and selecting part-time center staff. Directs the enforcement of rules and regulations and maintains discipline within the facility. Interacts with the public and others outside the work unit to obtain and provide information and assistance in a variety of circumstances. Screens and responds to inquiries and complaints; provides information on policies and procedures. Assists with developing short and long-term strategic goals pertaining to planning, development, design, and operational processes of the facility; develops and recommends policies and procedures Schedule the use of facilities and determine changes; supervise the collection of fees; and make budget recommendations as necessary.
TC Gammons
Assistant Director, Men’s Basketball
TC Gammons joined the ACC in 2010 and currently serves as an Assistant Director in the Men's Basketball department. In that role, he is the primary contact for member institutions and the men’s basketball alliance for all officiating logistics including scheduling and payments. He is also responsible for managing relationships and executing agreements regarding all conference facilities and vehicles.
A native of Mount Airy, North Carolina, Gammons earned a bachelor's degree in Sport Management from Winston-Salem State University in 2012. Gammons was an intern in the ACC Office from 2010-12, worked part-time for the league office in 2013 and was hired full-time in 2014.
April Reid
Director of Athletic Facilities, Equipment and Operations
April Reid is an alumnus of Winston-Salem State University and is a part of the WSSU athletic department. She is tasked with managing the athletics facilities upkeep and the ordering and issuance of equipment to all the athletic teams at Winston-Salem State. This includes managing the procurement, maintenance, and repair of all WSSU athletics equipment and apparel. She also is the lead for planning, setting up and managing all game day and athletic events held by the WSSU athletic department. Reid partners with the SPM department and supervise assigned students and interns to provide hands-on work experience in the athletic field. This includes but is not limited to game day operations, sports information, marketing, and facilities management.
Brooke Johnston
Associate Director of Fan Experience & Marketing
NC State Athletics
Prior to becoming the Associate Director of Fan Experience & Marketing at NC State in August of 2021, Brooke spent the previous 5 years at Wake Forest in multiple roles within the fan experience department. While at Wake, Brooke was the primary marketing contact for the women's basketball, baseball, and men's soccer programs, among other responsibilities. Brooke started her collegiate marketing career as a student volunteer interning in the NC State marketing department where she found her love for college athletics.
Dr. M. Dee Guillory
Associate Professor of Marketing and MBA Program Director
Winston-Salem State University
Dr. Guillory graduated from Georgia State University with a Ph.D. in Marketing. She also holds an M.B.A. in Marketing and Entrepreneurial Studies from the University of Michigan and a B.A. degree with honors in Organizational Behavior and Economics from Stanford University. Her research interests lie in the domains of social media, entrepreneurship, and experiential pedagogy. She has published in the Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing, the International Journal of Electronic Marketing and Retailing, the International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, Seniors Housing and Care Journal, the University of South Carolina Business and Economic Review and participated in numerous conference proceedings and/or presentations. Dr. Guillory is a Senior Research Fellow for Entrepreneurship and Marketing at the WSSU Center for the Study of Economic Mobility.
Dr. Kimberly Miller
Deputy Athletic Director/Director of Compliance/SWA - Augustana University
Miller brings 18 years of intercollegiate athletics experience to Augustana University and was the Deputy AD and SWA at Savannah State since February of 2019. Prior to her official appointment with Savannah State, Miller served as an athletic compliance consultant from November 2018 until being hired as the Deputy AD. She was charged with assisting the institution transition from Division I to Division II during her consulting role. Prior to her time at Savannah State, Miller spent time at Elizabeth City State University as an Assistant Professor and Sports Management Program Coordinator from August of 2018 to August of 2019 and Livingstone College from January 2018 to June 2018 as an Athletic Compliance Consultant and Visiting Associate Professor for Accreditation of the Sports Management Program.
From August of 2016 to January of 2018, Miller held the title of Associate Athletic Director for Internal Operations and Compliance, Senior Woman Administrator and Title IX Deputy for Athletics for Western Colorado University. From January to June of 2018, she served as an Athletic Compliance Consultant for the University. While at Western Colorado, she managed internal operations, served as the primary contact for the department in the Athletic Director's absence, was a member of the University's Title IX Committee, Student Affairs Strategic Planning Committee, Human Resources Workplace Committee and Student Conduct Committee and advised diversity and inclusion efforts for the University.
Miller has also spent time at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina, as an Assistant AD/SWA from December 2006 to January 2016. She also served as the head softball coach from 2008 to 2014. Dr. Miller is a graduate of Winston-Salem State with a degree in Sport Management and obtained her Master of Science from High Point in Sports Studies. She obtained her Doctor of Philosophy in Education from Northcentral University in July of 2017 with a Specialization in Sport Management.
Timothy A. Grant
Timothy A. Grant was appointed the Director of Recreation and Parks for the City of Winston-Salem on August 4, 2003 and retired on August 1, 2016. A native of Martinsville, Virginia, Tim received a B.S. degree (Health and Physical Education) from Winston-Salem State University and a M.S.S. degree (Sport Management) from the United States Sports Academy. Prior to his employment with the City of Winston-Salem, he served as the Assistant Director and the Interim Director of the Durham Parks and Recreation Department.
While previously employed as District Supervisor by the City of Winston-Salem, Tim created the department’s WePLAY (We Provide Leisure All Year) slogan and television program where he served as the host. Tim was selected as the City of Winston-Salem’s Staff Support Employee of the Year category winner in 1999 and in 2000. He was also selected as the City of Winston-Salem’s 2013 Employee Excellence Award winner for leadership.
Tim was employed at Winston-Salem State University from 1981 until 1995. Tim served as the Assistant Men’s Basketball Coach, Assistant Athletic Director, Head Coach Women’s Softball, and Instructor in the Department of Physical Education. He assisted with establishing the undergraduate program in Sport Management at Winston-Salem State University in 1987. His WSSU softball teams captured CIAA Championships in 1984, 85, and 86. Tim was selected as CIAA Softball Coach of the Year in 1983, 85 and 86.
Tim is a 2012 graduate of the Municipal Administration Program at the UNC School of Government and 2006 graduate of Leadership Winston-Salem. He has received numerous awards, but his most memorable awards are the 2008 Scott Cares Foundation Humanitarian Award, the 2008 Winston-Salem State University Unsung Hero Award, the 2008 Winston-Salem State University Big House Gaines Hall of Fame Inductee, and the 1996 Minister’s Conference of Winston-Salem Helping Hands Award.
He has served on several boards such as Leadership Winston-Salem, the North Carolina Recreation and Parks Association, North Carolina Recreation and Parks Scholarship Foundation Board, Winston-Salem Professional Tennis Board of Directors, Kate B. Reynolds Local Impact Advisory Council, Western Triad Fellowship of Christian Athletes Board, YMCA Community Outreach Advisory Board, NCRPA/SCRPA Joint Conference Planning Committee, Northwest North Carolina Service Corp Advisory Board, City of Winston-Salem United Way Campaign, Clarence E. “Big House” Gaines Scholarship Foundation Board, the Winston-Salem State University C.E. “Big House Gaines” Hall of Fame Committee and the Winston-Salem State University Foundation. Tim is also a life member of the Winston-Salem State University National Alumni Association and a Horns Club member.
Tim is an active member of the United Metropolitan Missionary Baptist Church and in his free time, Tim enjoys golf and music. He is married to the former Vicki C. Lamb, from Norfolk, Virginia and they have two daughters, Dr. Aja Lauren Grant and Niya Lauren Grant.
