About MSEN
The mission of the North Carolina Mathematics and Science Education Network (NCMSEN) Pre-College Program is to increase the pool of North Carolina graduates prepared to pursue majors and careers requiring mathematics and science. The programs expose scholars in grades 3 through 12 to STEM content and personal development that is often not available in public schools. Our programs prepare
scholars for future success in the workforce, college, and undergraduate STEM fields. The WSSU NC-MSEN Pre-College Program is the largest pre-college program at Winston-Salem State University.
The programs occur during the fall and spring semesters and provide scholars with hands-on learning in mathematics, science and technology, while also strengthening their critical thinking, communication, writing and leadership skills. In addition, scholars are made aware of academic course selection, ACT/SAT requirements and tips, the college selection process, financial aid, scholarships and career opportunities. Included in the curriculum are field trips, interactive speakers, parent workshops, and recognition and awards banquet.
STEM Challenge is a rotating competition event between four UNC system universities (Elizabeth City State University, North Carolina State University, & University of North Carolina at Charlotte) that is held in early April.
Scholars from all four institutions compete in hands-on STEM events such as the Amazing Race, engineering & design, water bottle rockets, write it/do it, parachute egg drop, oratorical contest, poster art, and a quiz bowl competition.
