The Journal of Best Practices in Health Professions Diversity: Research, Education and Policy (J Best Pract Health Prof Divers) published by UNC Press is an enterprise of the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University. Its mission is to provide a forum for the discussion of factors that promote or constrain the development and sustainability of a diverse health professions workforce. The journal is directed toward educators, policy makers and the health community. It is a bi-annual published source of information on maximizing recruitment and retention of a culturally diverse health professions and students in the healthcare professional areas.
Manuscripts considered for publication must explicitly adhere to issues related to diversity as well as identify the research, education, and policies that facilitate it. A combination of manuscripts from both seasoned and emerging scholars will be featured in each of the issues, which are published annually in the spring and fall.
All authors interested in submitting manuscripts are advised to review the author's guidelines prior to forwarding an article proposal. For authors interested in submitting proposals initially, must include a working title and 3-4 concise paragraphs describing the article and its relevance to health professions diversity in advance to the managing editor.
Scope of the Journal
The Journal of Best Practices in Health Professions Diversity: Research, Education and Policy (J Best Pract Health Prof Divers) is directed toward educators, policy makers and the health community. It is a bi-annual published source of information on maximizing recruitment and retention of a culturally diverse health professions and students in the healthcare professional areas. Therefore, the J Best Pract Health Prof Divers provides a forum for the discussion of factors that promote or constrain the development and sustainability of a diverse health professions workforce. Our commitment is to publish innovative manuscripts that utilize sound scientific, evidential, theoretical or philosophical research to examine the complex issues that undergird health disparities in communities of color, the practices and policies that facilitate or hinder diversity within and across health professions.

J Best Pract Health Prof Divers is a peer-reviewed publication, published by the University of North Carolina Press(UNC Press). It is sponsored by the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University, National Association of Medical Minority Education, Inc. (NAMME), and the North Carolina Alliance for Health Professions Diversity.
The J Best Pract Health Prof Divers is indexed through ProQuest, JSTOR (provides our journal wide access and international exposure), EBSCOhost databases, CINAHL® Complete (under Medical Education and Cultural Diversity subjects), Business Source Complete, Health Policy Reference Center among other databases. Lastly, numerous authors published in our journal that have government funded research including NIH have their manuscripts included in PubMed Central (MEDLINE database). We have been indexed since 2010 and have been in existence since 2007.

Also, manuscripts that address health issues and associated disparities that might hinder health professions, recruitment or retention will be considered.
Manuscripts accepted for publication become the sole property of the J Best Pract Health Prof Divers and may not be published elsewhere without prior written consent from the Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Peggy Valentine.
The Journal's Authorship Responsibility, Copyright Transfer, and Financial Disclosure form must be signed by each author and submitted at the same time the manuscript is initially submitted for consideration. Completed forms with original signatures can be scanned, saved as a PDF file, and attached as a file with your manuscript submission. Alternatively, forms can be faxed to the Managing Editor at 336-750-2568.
Manuscripts submitted for consideration of publication must be an original contribution that has not been previously published and is not under consideration for publication elsewhere. All persons listed as authors are expected to have made a significant contribution to the development of the manuscript. Authors are ultimately responsible for ensuring validity of published manuscripts.
All manuscripts will be reviewed by the Associate Editor prior to being assigned to external peer-reviewers. Final publication decisions remain the responsibility of the Associate Editor and/or Editor. Proofs of accepted manuscripts will be sent to the corresponding author for final review prior to publication. Extensive changes to the proofs may delay publication. The corresponding author is responsible for the entire content of copyedited articles and may incur charges should extensive changes to proofs be necessary to correct errors, other than printer's errors.
International submissions are welcomed. All manuscripts including, international submissions, must meet standards of English used for professional publications.
Submissions by Emerging Scholars are welcomed. Emerging scholars are defined as persons who both completed their terminal degree within the past 5 years and have pursued a scholarly career for less than 5 years. Emerging Scholars should identify themselves as such at the time an article is submitted. Emerging scholars will be given additional assistance in developing articles for publication.

Publication Ethics and Publication Malpractice Statement
J Best Pract Health Prof Divers is committed to ensuring the highest standards of publication ethics and integrity. The journal follows the guidelines and best practices of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), the World Association of Medical Editors (WAME), and the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE). The journal expects all parties involved in the publication process, including authors, reviewers, editors, and publishers, to adhere to these ethical principles and to report any suspected misconduct or breach of ethics.
Duties of Authors
Authors should ensure that their manuscripts are original works that have not been published elsewhere, and that they have properly acknowledged and cited all sources used. Authors should agree to cooperate with any corrections, retractions, or expressions of concern issued by the journal. Authors should avoid plagiarism, self-plagiarism, fabrication, falsification, manipulation, or misrepresentation of data or images. Authors should also disclose any potential conflicts of interest that might influence the results or interpretation of their work, such as financial, personal, or professional relationships. Authors should obtain informed consent from human participants and ethical approval from relevant authorities for any research involving humans or animals. Authors should also respect the confidentiality and privacy of participants and not disclose any identifying information without their permission. Authors should be prepared to share their data or materials upon reasonable request from editors or reviewers, unless they are bound by confidentiality agreements or legal restrictions. Authors should acknowledge and disclose any use of AI technology and OpenAI - such as GPT-3, Codex, DALL-E, or CLIP - to assist with the writing or research of their article, and cite the relevant papers or websites. Authors should also ensure that all co-authors have contributed significantly to the work and have approved the final version of the manuscript and its submission to the journal.
Duties of Reviewers
Reviewers should evaluate manuscripts objectively and fairly, based on their academic merit and relevance to the journal’s scope and mission. Reviewers should provide constructive and respectful feedback to authors, and avoid personal or professional bias or criticism. Reviewers should also respect the confidentiality of the review process and not disclose any information about the manuscript or its content to anyone other than the editors. Reviewers should also declare any conflicts of interest that might affect their judgment or impartiality, such as competing or collaborative relationships with the authors or their institutions. Reviewers should also alert the editors to any suspected misconduct or ethical issues in the manuscript, such as plagiarism, duplication, fabrication, falsification, manipulation, or misrepresentation.
Duties of Editors
Editors are responsible for overseeing the editorial process and ensuring the quality and integrity of the journal’s content. Editors should make editorial decisions based on the academic merit and relevance of the manuscripts, without any influence from external pressures or interests. Editors should also ensure a fair and transparent peer review process, by selecting qualified and impartial reviewers, providing them with clear instructions and guidelines, and protecting their anonymity. Editors should also respect the confidentiality of the authors and reviewers, and not disclose any information about the manuscripts or their content to anyone other than those involved in the publication process. Editors should also handle any conflicts of interest among authors, reviewers, editors, or publishers, by disclosing them, avoiding them, or resolving them appropriately. Editors should also respond promptly and professionally to any complaints or concerns raised by authors, reviewers, readers, or other parties, and take appropriate actions to correct, retract, or express concern about any published content that is found to be erroneous, unethical, or fraudulent.
Duties of Publishers
Publishers are responsible for supporting the editors in fulfilling their duties and ensuring the quality and integrity of the journal’s content. Publishers should provide adequate resources and technical support for the editorial process and publication of the journal. Publishers should also ensure that the journal’s policies and procedures are clear, transparent, and consistent with international standards and best practices. Publishers should also respect the editorial independence and autonomy of the editors, and not interfere with their editorial decisions or impose any commercial or political influence on them. Publishers should also protect the intellectual property rights and copyrights of the authors and the journal, and ensure that the journal’s content is accessible and disseminated widely. Publishers should also adhere to ethical principles and guidelines in all aspects of publishing, such as advertising, sponsorship, indexing, archiving, or retraction.
Written permission to borrow or adapt copy written material, including your own material that has been previously published in this journal, must be submitted by authors. Authors also need to submit complete details regarding where the material was previously published. Authors are responsible for covering any permission fees that may be required by the copyright owner.
