The Journal of Best Practices in Health Professions Diversity: Research, Education and Policy (J Best Pract Health Prof Divers), published by UNC Press, is an initiative of the School of Health Sciences at Winston-Salem State University. Its mission is to provide a scholarly platform for examining factors that impact the development, sustainability, and effectiveness of a well-prepared health professions workforce across multiple disciplines. The journal is designed for educators, policymakers, and healthcare professionals, offering research-driven insights to strengthen recruitment, retention, and workforce readiness in healthcare education and practice.

Manuscripts considered for publication should focus on key issues related to healthcare workforce planning, development, and accessibility, while highlighting research, educational strategies, and policies that shape these efforts. Each issue, published in the spring and fall, features contributions from both established and emerging scholars, fostering a broad perspective on the challenges and opportunities in the field.

All prospective authors are encouraged to review the author’s guidelines before submitting an article proposal. Initial submissions should include a working title and 3-4 concise paragraphs summarizing the article’s focus and its relevance to the evolving landscape of health professions workforce development. Proposals should be submitted to the managing editor in advance.

Scope of the Journal

The Journal of Best Practices in Health Professions Diversity: Research, Education and Policy (J Best Pract Health Prof Divers) is designed for educators, policymakers, and health professionals seeking evidence-based insights into strengthening the health workforce. As a biannual publication, it serves as a platform for exploring the factors that support or challenge efforts to build a robust, inclusive, and sustainable workforce across health disciplines.

Our commitment is to publish innovative manuscripts grounded in scientific research, theory, or philosophy that examine the underlying causes of health disparities, the structural and systemic influences on healthcare access and outcomes, and the strategies that enhance workforce preparedness and effectiveness in serving diverse communities.
