BB&T pledges $125,000 in honor of Foundation board member

Winston-Salem State University announced today BB&T has given $125,000 to the Winston-Salem State University Foundation for academic scholarships for students. The gift will be used to create the Cynthia A. Williams Endowed Scholarship for undergraduates who have declared a major in biology, chemistry, computer science, or mathematics.

Cynthia Williams, a second-term board member for the Winston-Salem State University Foundation, Inc., recently retired from BB&T’s Executive Management team. The gift is given in honor of her retirement, her tremendous contribution to BB&T’s success, and her passion for continuing education.

“I believe that, if everyone received a great education, the world would be a better place,” said Williams. “I am truly impressed with the progress that Winston-Salem State University has made with their retention, graduation, and job-placement rates. I’m so honored to be part of BB&T’s continuing commitment to education and the establishment of a scholarship for students pursuing degrees in STEM fields.”

Michelle Cook, Vice Chancellor for University Advancement and Executive Director of the WSSU Foundation said “It is especially gratifying when a board member supports the future we envision for our students. We are honored that Ms. Williams chose to make this investment in Winston-Salem State University and our students.”

Williams, who completed a remarkable 30-year career at the end of June as an audit, banking and communications professional, was BB&T senior vice president and chief corporate communications officer. In her most recent role, she led all internal and external communications, including brand and advertising strategy, corporate communications, and social media. Her responsibilities also included CRA and community development, multicultural banking, and corporate philanthropy. She also served as chair of BB&T's Executive Diversity Council.

In addition to serving on the WSSU Foundation Board, Williams has served on the boards of The Arts Council of Winston-Salem, N.C. Bankers Association, N.C. Black Repertory Company's National Black Theatre Festival, Northwest Piedmont Workforce Development, Winston-Salem Foundation, and The Piedmont Club.
