Welcome to the New Semester - Chancellor's Letter
Dear Ram Family,
Welcome to the start of a new semester! This is an exciting time at Winston-Salem State University as we prepare to celebrate the 125th anniversary of our founding in September. Dr. Simon Green Atkins founded Slater Academy (now WSSU) to provide educational opportunities for the children and grandchildren of recently emancipated slaves. The curriculum was designed to help students to achieve upward mobility, economic stability, and the ability to thrive.
WSSU continues Dr. Atkins’ legacy by providing a supportive environment for our students. Our faculty is dedicated to preparing students to do more than earn a living. We provide students with high-impact learning experiences, such as internships, research projects, and study abroad opportunities—all of which serve to build knowledge, cultivate talent, and mold character. I know he would be proud of the work we are doing and impressed by the growth and evolution of this great campus.
This year we welcome the largest freshman class since 2008—more than 950 students are beginning their college journey here at WSSU. In addition, nearly 500 new Rams are joining the Ram Family as transfer students. I welcome each of them to our dynamic and thriving learning community. I know they will soon discover that this is a place where dreams become reality and potential is unlocked.
Thank you for playing your part in making this university the outstanding place that it is. Your dedication to WSSU and its mission allow us to continue to strive toward greatness. I look forward to welcoming newcomers and reconnecting with old friends in the coming year.
Sincerely,
Elwood L. Robinson, Ph.D.
