Emergency preparedness exercise planned at WSSU March 6

WSSU's Police and Public Safety and campus administration are partnering with the Winston-Salem Police and Fire departments, the Forsyth County Sheriff's Office and Forsyth County EMS on the emergency preparedness exercise.

Winston-Salem State University, in partnership with agencies in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, will conduct a large-scale emergency preparedness exercise on campus on Tuesday, March 6. 

Nearly 200 emergency personnel, volunteers, and WSSU faculty, staff and students are expected to participate.

The exercise will begin at the Bowman Gray Stadium Fieldhouse at 7:30 a.m. and continue through 1 p.m., will help WSSU and local first responders test response, communication and recovery plans during a campus emergency. During the exercise, first responders and other resources will be deployed as if an actual incident is occurring. Signs indicating emergency training will be in the area of the exercise.

WSSU Police and Public Safety and campus administration are partnering with the Winston-Salem Police and Fire departments, the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office, Forsyth County EMS, Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center and Novant Forsyth Medical Center. 

The campus and local communities should be aware this is only a test. Participants will wear colored vests or be in uniform. The exercise is funded through a $30,000 grant from the University of North Carolina System.

This is WSSU’s third full-scale exercise since 2013.

Student, faculty member honored with King ‘Building the Dream’ Award

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., two members of the Ramily were recognized during a joint program of Winston-Salem State University and Wake Forest University on the official federal holiday honoring the civil rights icon. Student Nia James and faculty member Maestra D’Walla Simmons-Burke were the 2025 honorees.
