Business 40 closure now starts on Nov. 17
Construction on a 1.2-mile section of Business 40 between the intersections of Peters Creek Parkway and U.S. 52 in Winston-Salem will impact traffic around Winston-Salem State University’s campus for up to 18 months.
Here are five things you need to know.
1. The shutdown now begins on Saturday, Nov. 17.
The closure begins at 6 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17. The new closure date was announced on Wednesday, Oct. 31. The closure will continue for up to 18 months.
2. Traffic will be detoured throughout the closure.
The Business 40 interchanges at U.S. 52 and Peters Creek Parkway will remain open during the construction. Vehicles will be able to take those exits but not drive past them. Alternate routes include: Interstate 40, U.S. 52, Peters Creek Parkway and Research Parkway.
The $99.2 million project also will affect downtown bridges at Cherry Street, Marshall Street and Brookstown Avenue.
3. Allow extra time.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) recommends allowing 20-30 minutes extra time.
4. Plan your route by using the Waze app.
The NCDOT has partnered with Waze to help motorists find the best transportation routes through the construction. Waze offers traffic and route information with real-time alerts for accidents, traffic jams, and more. Visitors to WSSU are encouraged to download and use Waze, which offers route options and traffic updates.
