Jordan Brand Wings Scholar finds home at WSSU
A year ago, Javondre Cole received the surprise of his life: He’d been selected to receive a scholarship to the college of his choice through the Jordan Brand Wings Scholar program.
In August, Cole left his hometown of Portland, Oregon, and traveled over 2,000 miles to begin his studies as a freshman at Winston-Salem State University. Cole was one of only 26 high school seniors selected for the full-ride scholarship in 2018, which also includes one-on-one mentorship and internship opportunities.
After arriving at WSSU, the sport management major quickly became involved in leadership and social groups like "The Male Experience" and "Brother to Brother." He also was part of a team of sport management students who won first place at a statewide case study competition.
Although he's the first Jordan Brands Wing Scholar to attend WSSU, he likely won't be the last. In February, Michael Jordan announced that the scholarship program would expand to include students in the Charlotte area.
Here are eight questions with … Javondre' Cole.

Attending an HBCU was something I always aspired to do. It was just about selecting the right one. As a sport management major, it was important to pay attention to sports organizations near my campus to enhance my chances for future opportunities in my field.
What is your favorite chill spot on campus?
Last year, it was the C3 pod (H. Douglas Covington Hall, third floor). On a nice day, the clock tower.

What was your reaction when you found out that you had won the Michael Jordan Brand scholarship?
Speechless. It was a pat on the back moment for myself knowing the effort I put in behind the scenes was recognized. It humbled me and motivated me to continue my chase for prosperity.
