Two alumni named to WSSU Foundation board 

Two university alumni have been named to the Winston-Salem State University Foundation Board of Directors. 

 Marcus Cox '97 and Mataryun "Mo" Wright, '01 will join the board at its Dec. 11 meeting. 

Cox, a native of Winston-Salem, is a senior operations consultant manager for Starbucks Corp. Previously, he was the market president for Bank of America in Asheville. He has served on several boards, including the Child Advocacy Center, The Arts Council of Cumberland County, Boys and Girls Club of Cumberland County, Second Harvest Food Bank of Southeast North Carolina and the Asheville Buncombe Technical Community College Foundation Board. 

Wright is the president and chief executive officer of RAMA Consulting Group, based in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to his entrepreneurial pursuits, he served as a congressional staffer for Congressman Melvin L. Watts and later as director of race relations and diversity for the United Way of Central Ohio. 

He also serves on several boards and committees, including: the Columbus Metropolitan Club, the United Way of Central Ohio, the Huntington Bank Business Advisory Committee and the City of Columbus Recreation and Parks Commission. 

The WSSU Foundation Board of Directors – composed of community members, alumni and university administrators –  oversees how the foundation raises money, invests donations, and distributes grants, of which WSSU is the sole beneficiary. It also advises and supports other activities of the foundation designed to further the interests of WSSU.

Founded in 1970, the Winston-Salem State University Foundation Inc. is a private, non-profit organization that focuses on the long-term needs of the university and enhances the efficiency of its fundraising efforts.

Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) will host legendary hip-hop artist and producer Pete Rock as the featured guest speaker for its annual Black History Month celebration. A team of researchers, led by Dr. Muztaba Fuad, professor and interim chair of computer science at Winston-Salem State University, are pioneering the use of mobile apps to make healthcare work more efficient. WSSU students are helping with the research by tracking their own movements and postures.

Student, faculty member honored with King ‘Building the Dream’ Award

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., two members of the Ramily were recognized during a joint program of Winston-Salem State University and Wake Forest University on the official federal holiday honoring the civil rights icon. Student Nia James and faculty member Maestra D’Walla Simmons-Burke were the 2025 honorees.
