Mebane named associate vice chancellor of human resources

August Mebane, a seasoned leader and certified professional coach, joins Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) as the associate vice chancellor of human resources. Her appointment began on July 13. 

Mebane has over ten years' experience in human resources (HR). Most recently, she served as the chief human resources officer at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Adams School of Dentistry. Prior to joining UNC Chapel Hill, she was the assistant director of human resources for the Duke University Healthcare System. Mebane has also worked in HR at Sodexo, a food services and facilities management company, and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals.

“Dr. Mebane is an exceptional leader with a clear understanding of diversity, inclusion, and retention,” said Constance Mallette, vice chancellor of Finance and Administration at WSSU. “She is a positive change agent with a diversified background who understands the importance of cultivating human capital.” 

A native of Newark, Delaware, Mebane holds a bachelor’s degree in English and legal studies from the University of Delaware, a Master of Science in Organizational Leadership from Wilmington University, and a doctorate in Organizational Development and Change from Colorado Technical University. Additionally, she is a member of the Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM). 

Mebane is a certified life coach whose areas of focus include employee engagement, training and development, employee relations, change management, organizational development, and strategy. 

“I am excited to join the Ram family,” said Mebane. “I have found that the leadership, staff, and faculty strive for excellence and ensure that there is a focus on the mission of serving students. I believe that HR is the heartbeat of every organization. I am excited to enhance processes and create opportunities to expand the depth of the partnerships between HR and the campus community. My goal is to assist in taking our HR department to a new level of excellence and help lead the charge of being a people-centered workforce.” 

Mebane replaces Lester Arnold, who departed WSSU in June of 2019.

Student, faculty member honored with King ‘Building the Dream’ Award

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr., two members of the Ramily were recognized during a joint program of Winston-Salem State University and Wake Forest University on the official federal holiday honoring the civil rights icon. Student Nia James and faculty member Maestra D’Walla Simmons-Burke were the 2025 honorees.
