WSSU Awarded Funding For Alzheimer’s Disease Programs Initiative

Winston-Salem State University has been awarded a $139,594.83 grant from DHHS Administration for Community Living (ACL) led by Dr. Allison Calhoun, Clinical Assistant Professor Occupational Therapy to build a stronger and more resilient dementia-capable aging network in Forsyth County.  

The goal of Senior Services, Inc. 's Alzheimer's Disease Prevention Initiatives Project conducted in partnership local hospital systems, universities, a Senior Center, and third-party evaluator is over the three-year project to expand and improve the existing dementia capable home and community-based service systems in Forsyth County, North Carolina. 

The objectives of the programs initiative are: 1) to identify people who live alone with possible dementia and deliver care management; 2) to improve dementia education targeting people at high risk of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) and expand evidence-based programming at the Williams Adult Day Center; 3) to deliver evidence-based behavioral symptoms management training and expert consultations for caregivers.

Anticipated program initiative outcomes:  ) people who live alone with dementia are identified; 2) people who live alone with dementia receive referrals due to staff/volunteer training; 3) People with dementia who live alone enroll in BRI Care Consultation; 4) improved quality of life for people who live alone with dementia, people at high risk of ADRD and caregivers; 4) people who are at high risk of ADRD have increased knowledge of ADRD and how to access available services; and 5)

Caregiver College graduates increase their knowledge of ADRD; 7) Caregiver College graduates are equipped to educate and support caregivers of people who are at high risk of ADRD in their communities. Expected products include marketing and outreach materials, ADRD identification training materials and assessment tools, Coordinated Education/Targeted Outreach Plan, Activity and Data Collection matrix templates, Delivering In-home Interventions Fact Sheet, Caregiver College syllabus, Collaborative Learning Log.
