Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) collaborates with several associated entities to advance academic excellence, student success, and community engagement. These organizations operate independently while maintaining a close partnership with the university to support strategic priorities.
What Are Associated Entities?
Associated entities are independent organizations established to serve specific roles that enhance WSSU’s mission. These roles may include managing financial resources, providing scholarships, fundraising, promoting university programs, and advancing institutional goals. Using associated entities allows the university to maximize resources, enhance opportunities for students, and strengthen the impact of university initiatives.
Each associated entity operates under a formal agreement with the university, ensuring alignment with the university’s guiding principles. WSSU ensures that each associated entity operates transparently and in alignment with the university’s policies and regulations, including UNC System Regulation 600.2.5.2. Regular reviews and collaborative meetings strengthen communication and accountability between the university and its associated entities.

- WSSU Foundation, Inc.
The WSSU Foundation advances the mission of Winston-Salem State University by providing critical financial and strategic support. Key functions include:- Raising, managing, and administering funds for WSSU’s charitable, educational, and scientific purposes.
- Partnering with the Office of Advancement on fundraising, marketing, public relations, and alumni engagement.
- Supporting scholarships, faculty development, facilities, and programs.
- Promoting the growth and welfare of WSSU through strategic initiatives.
- SG Atkins CDC
The SG Atkins Community Development Corporation (CDC) fosters community revitalization and strengthens ties between WSSU and its surrounding neighborhoods. Its focus includes:- Building a shared vision for community revitalization between WSSU and the neighborhood.
- Engaging students, employees, and resources in community service.
- Supporting affordable housing, economic development, and social services projects.
- Promoting community-based leadership and leveraging external funding to support neighborhood development.
- Supporting WSSU’s growth and welfare through aligned initiatives.
- National Alumni Association (NAA)
The NAA enhances alumni engagement and supports WSSU through scholarships and other strategic initiatives. Key efforts include:- Partnering with the Office of Advancement to provide financial support for scholarships.
- Fundraising for the university’s strategic priorities.
- Participating in recruitment programs, award recognition, and special events.
- Supporting the planning of homecoming, reunions, and alumni publications.
- Developing alumni networks and increasing alumni participation to strengthen support for WSSU.
