WSSU's Division of Nursing is pleased to have received funding from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) to offer the Federal Loan Forgiveness Program for Nursing.
This program is available to Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students who are – or plan to be – nurse educators or advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) preceptor.
WHY THIS PROGRAM?
There is a serious, and increasing, nationwide shortage of nursing faculty to meet the demand for educating future generations of nurses. The goal of the program is to encourage graduate and professional nursing students to pursue careers in nursing education or practice as an APRN.
- Financial Benefit: The loan covers 100% of tuition, fees, and books.
- Loan Forgiveness: After graduation, 85% of the loan is forgiven if the student secures a full-time educator or serves as APRN preceptor within 12 months of graduating and maintains the position for at least four years.
- Limitations: Funding cannot be used for general living expenses, health insurance, or costs covered by another funding source.
To qualify for this program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a WSSU division of Nursing MSN or DNP student in good standing
- Be a U.S. citizen or lawful resident of the U.S. and its territories
- Have no judgment liens entered against them based on the default on a Federal debt, as per 28 U.S.C. 3201 (e)
- Enrollment Requirement: Students must be enrolled for at least two consecutive semesters each academic year of loan support.
- Commitment: Students will sign a Letter of Commitment for the initial amount funded and updated loan amounts each semester. A Statement of Borrowers’ Rights and Responsibilities is required each year of NFLP support.
How to Apply
To apply for the Nurse Faculty Loan Program, you must attend an interest meeting and submit your completed application to Dr. Dionne Roberts. Interest meetings are usually scheduled during the fall semester.
