First Year Experience (FYE) Seminar Course

First Year Experience (FYE): Foundations for RAM Success is designed to familiarize students with WSSU’s resources and community.

The goal of the course is to support a successful transition into college life at WSSU by helping students develop the skills, habits, and mindset necessary for academic, personal, and professional growth. Through a structured curriculum, students will:
• develop critical thinking abilities
• learn problem-solving techniques
• cultivate a commitment to academic success, and
• explore pathways that connect their academic journey to future career goals

FYE: Foundations for RAM serves as “practice” to develop the ideas and behaviors students will use in all of their other classes and lays the foundation for their undergraduate degree program and future endeavors. By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Identify, apply, and reflect on academic tools, strategies, and problem-solving techniques that contribute to academic success during the first year and beyond.
2. Develop a commitment to personal, academic, and professional growth by setting meaningful goals and creating actionable plans to achieve them.
3. Demonstrate knowledge of WSSU’s history, traditions, and cultural context, and evaluate the importance of campus engagement in fostering a sense of community and belonging.
4. Explore academic and professional opportunities that align with their interests, strengths, and career goals, and create a roadmap for post-graduation success.
5. Implement strategies for health and wellness, financial literacy, and self-advocacy, while utilizing career readiness tools such as career assessments, networking, and interview preparation.
