What is it like living in a residence hall?
Your residence hall is your home away from home. It is a place to make new friends and engage in fun and exciting activities. You will have a resident advisor who can help you navigate living on campus and give you guidance throughout the year.
What is a resident advisor (RA)?
The resident advisor (RA) is a student who lives in your community and helps provide a safe educational community. Your RA works with an RA staff team to facilitate an environment that supports you and your community.
Are there other staff members who live in the residence hall?
In addition to your resident advisor (RA), each hall complex has a full-time professional hall director assigned to work with students and staff in their respective buildings.
Are there fun things to do in residence halls?
Yes! You should talk to your RA about what events are planned in your residence hall. The RA staff and your Hall Council work together to provide lots of opportunities to get to know the rest of the students in your hall, travel within and outside of Winston-Salem, and experience all that campus has to offer.
Am I required to get a meal plan if I live on campus?
Yes. For students residing on campus, a meal plan is required. Meal plan options are provided to suit the various schedules.
What kinds of pets are permitted?
Pets are only permitted in the residence halls as guide animals. Fish, in reasonable numbers and size, are also permitted, but check with your hall staff to be certain.
What furniture comes in my room?
Each student has a bed, desk, chest of drawers, and a closet. Visit the Campus Housing page for descriptions of the individual residence halls.
How long are the beds? What kind of sheets will I need?
All beds on campus are extra-long (80") twin bed sheets except for Rams Commons. Rams Commons uses full size beds.
Do the residence halls have computer labs?
Yes, every residence hall has computer labs.
Are there laundry facilities in the residence halls?
Yes, there are laundry facilities in each residence hall.
How does WSSU keep me safe and secure?
WSSU takes safety very seriously. WSSU Campus Police and Housing and Residence Life collaborate to provide residential students with security resources including ongoing educational programs, safety-related policies, sanctions for policy violations, and staff assistance for dealing with security issues and emergencies.
Are residence halls locked?
Yes, residence halls are locked 24/7. You must use your RAMCard to enter the building. You will have a separate key or card to enter your room.
What if guests want to visit me?
Your guests should contact you—their resident host. Hosts should let guests in and escort them to the resident's room. Students are only able to access the residence hall to which they are assigned.
Should I always take my room key with me?
It’s a good idea and we recommend it. Locking your door and taking your key, even if just going down the hall for a few minutes, is a great practice and the best precaution against theft. Taking your key with you decreases the chances of being charged for lock-outs and replacement keys.
What happens if I lose my room key?
Lost keys are a serious concern. A lost key not only impacts the safety of the person who lost the key but the safety of roommates, future residents, and peers residing within the same building. We take our resident's security very seriously. Charges for replacement keys or lock changes vary depending on the residence hall, so contact your hall director or resident assistant immediately.
What can I do to keep my residence hall safe and secure?
Security in the residence halls is a joint responsibility of Housing and Residence Life, Campus Police, and each resident. You are the most important part of our cooperative effort to provide a safe and secure community.
