Research Compliance

Winston-Salem State University, through the Office of Sponsored Programs, is committed to achieving the highest standards of excellence and integrity in all its research endeavors and promoting the ethical conduct of research.

A primary goal of the Office of Sponsored Programs is to educate the Winston-Salem State University's research community about regulatory requirements and ethical standards governing research. Principal investigators are responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations and policies.

Research conducted at Winston-Salem State University is subject to a wide range of federal and state policies established to ensure ethical conduct in research. Through three key committees and related programs and activities, the Office of Sponsored Programs develops, implements and oversees university policies related to the following areas:

Research involving Biohazardous Materials or Recombinant DNA

All research and educational activities that involve infection agents, plant or animal pathogens, hazardous chemicals, recombinant DNA molecules, microorganisms, human etiologic agents, human tissues or body fluids, or gene therapy must be reviewed and approved by IBC prior to initiation. Governed by Institutional Biosafety Committee.

Research Involving Human Subjects (IRB)

Winston-Salem State University’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) is the committee responsible for ensuring the protection of human subjects partnering in research studies at Winston-Salem State University. Governed by Institutional Review Board.

Research involving Animals

Winston-Salem State University’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) is the committee responsible for ensuring the protection and care of vertebrate animals being used in research studies at Winston-Salem State University. Governed by Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
