Cost of Service
Student Health Fee
The Student Health Fee covers Student Counseling services, and some costs associated with Student Health services. Immunizations, allergy shots, and injections are common charges that are billed to students and/or their health insurance. Off campus charges also apply for laboratory services sent off site and for referral visits from co-providers or co-facilities. Co-payments as determined by your health insurance may apply.
UNC Medical Insurance Requirements
The UNC System requires eligible students who are taking six or more campus-based credits to have health insurance coverage. If the insurance charge appears on your bill, you will be automatically enrolled in the Student Blue Insurance Plan (SHIP). You have the option to remove the insurance charge by waiving coverage and uploading the front and back of your active insurance card in the Student Blue Portal. It is the student's responsibility each Fall and Spring semester to complete an online waiver before the published deadline. Once approved by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBS), an email notification is sent to all email addresses on file, and the SHIP premium is credited by Student Accounts within 1-5 business days of the waiver being approved. Please read all emails from BCBS.
Good Faith Estimate
A Good Faith Estimate is provided to students not using health insurance for their visit, including those with lapsed health insurance or those who elect not to use their insurance coverage. Please let your provider know at the time of the appointment if you will not be using health insurance for your visit. More information regarding Good Faith Estimates can be found here.
Student Blue- Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)
Student Blue, underwritten by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC), is an insurance vendor on all UNC campuses. The plan covers students in North Carolina, out of state, or abroad. Students benefit from no copayments required at the Wellness Center, with most on-site services covered.
Students must enroll in or waive (opt out) the SHIP coverage, including BCBS plans, by September 10, 2026, for the Fall, and February 1, 2027, for the Spring Term.
The Wellness Center is not in-network with out-of-state Medicaid, Kaiser Permanente, and other plans; however, if coverage is active, the waiver may be approved. Please note your out-of-state plan may not provide coverage in North Carolina. Please also note that students are responsible for all charges not covered by their respective medical plans at the Wellness Center.
