Cost of Service

Student Health Fee

The Student Health Fee covers free Student Counseling Services, the WSSU Pharmacy, which is conveniently located on campus, and some cost associated with providing health care. Immunizations, allergy shots, special injections, and prescriptions are some of the common charges that are billed to students and/or their health insurance. Off campus charges also apply for laboratory services sent off site and for referral visits from co-providers or co-facilities. Co-payments as determined by your insurance may apply.

UNC Medical Insurance Requirements

The UNC System requires all UNC students to have health insurance coverage. Students are automatically enrolled in the Student Blue- Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) and the charge appears on the semester bill. Students may waive (opt out) of the SHIP plan by providing proof of current health insurance coverage before the published deadline. It is the student's responsibility each Fall and Spring semester to register and complete an on-line waiver before the published deadline which requires proof of active health insurance. Once approved by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, an email notification is sent and the cost for SHIP is removed from the semester bill.

Good Faith Estimate

A Good Faith Estimate is provided to students not using health insurance for their visit, including those with lapsed health insurance or those who elect not to use their insurance coverage. The good faith estimate is not a bill, but an estimate of expected charge before you get an item or service. You could be charged more than the estimate if you get additional items or services during your visit that your provider did not anticipate. You also will receive a good faith estimate for co-provider and co-facility referrals for care off campus. Please let your provider know at the time of the appointment if you will not be using health insurance for your visit. More information regarding Good Faith Estimates can be found here.

Student Blue- Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP)

Student Blue, underwritten by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC), is an insurance vendor on all UNC campuses. The plan covers students while they are in Winston-Salem, back home, or abroad. Students benefit from no copayments required at the Wellness Center with most on-site services covered and low-cost prescriptions.

Students must enroll in or waive (opt out) of the coverage no later than the published deadline. Students that do not submit an approved waiver, and have not enrolled themselves in the program, will be enrolled automatically.

Students who have existing family or individual coverage through another Blue Cross Blue Shield plan must still complete the enrollment/wavier process.

The NC Medicaid plans will be evaluated on the same criteria as other medical plans. The Wellness Center is out of network with out-of-state Medicaid plans; therefore, students are encouraged to remain enrolled in SHIP. Please note students are responsible for all charges not covered by their respective medical plans.
