International Applicants
Most international students are accepted for enrollment beginning in the fall semester, however, the University also accepts international students who wish to begin in January. The international student application deadlines for Winston-Salem State University are:
Spring Entry |
December 1 |
Fall Entry |
August 1 |
As an international applicant, it is extremely important that you apply as early as possible before the application deadline for the semester when you plan to begin your undergraduate studies. This allows sufficient time to obtain your official school records, to have your school records evaluated by a Credential Evaluation Service, to arrange for the required examinations, to have your bank send statements of your financial resources, to have your application reviewed, and to secure your visa materials.
Be sure to review the requirements for your major through our Online Catalogs.
Application Requirements
In order for your application file to be reviewed and evaluated, all the following documents must be submitted by the appropriate international student application deadline:
- Complete Application
- Official High School and College Transcripts
- All applicants must prove proof of high school completion.
- If you attended school outside of the United States, you must have your international transcript evaluated by one of the Credential Evaluation Services: WES (World Educational Services), Educational Perspectives, International Education Evaluations (IEE), Josef Silny & Associates Inc., SPANTRAN and National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES).
- All post-secondary education coursework must have a course-by-course evaluation.
Classes at Winston-Salem State University are conducted in English, and your assignments, papers, and tests must be written in acceptable English. Since the University does not offer English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) courses for non-native speakers, you must be able to speak and write fluently. International students must be proficient in the English language and good students in their own countries before they can study here. Students should study about twelve years in schools in their own countries, beginning at about age six. The last four or five years should include study of English, history, mathematics, and science. In the American system this means graduation from high school with a diploma. In the British system this means completion of Form V before applying, and, if possible, completion of Form VI before entering the University. In the French system this means completing the baccalaureate. Students are usually between 18 and 20 years of age when they enter WSSU as undergraduates.
If English is not your native language, even if English is the medium of instruction in your home country, you are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), or International English Language Testing System (ILETS) which are administered at many sites worldwide. Your score on this test must be forwarded to Admissions by the testing service.
If registration forms for the TOEFL examination are not available at your present school, contact

Every student applying to Winston-Salem State University under age 24 must take a standardized test that measures aptitude in verbal, math, and writing areas. As with domestic students, international students can choose to take either the SAT I: Scholastic Assessment Test or the ACT: American College Test. SAT II Subject Tests are not required.
The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) measures verbal and mathematical ability and is required for all students. Information about the test can be found at many international schools or at U.S. Embassies, Consulates, or offices of the United States Information Service. For information on the SAT, visit College Board International.

Please remember that test registration deadlines are usually 6-8 weeks before the actual test date, and it can take a month or more after the test is taken for the University to receive your scores. Careful planning is required so that all testing is completed before the application deadline
The TOEFL, SAT, and ACT are given several times a year worldwide. International schools and educational advising centers supported by US consulates or embassies should be able to provide you with test registration packets and sample test booklets.
If you are unfamiliar with the TOEFL, SAT, and ACT you may find additional information booklets and practice tests helpful at College Board. Please be sure when registering for the SAT or ACT to request that your score results be sent to Winston-Salem State University. Our school code for the SAT and TOEFL is 5909; our school code for the ACT is 3178.
Before admission to a degree seeking program can be completed, an applicant must document availability of sufficient funds for the first two semesters of enrollment. The estimated amount required for an academic year is $28,000 for undergraduate students and $28,700 for graduate students (subject to change without prior notice). Contact the Office of Admissions or Office of International Programs for expense estimates and current costs.
Note: Winston-Salem State University cannot assume financial responsibility for international students unless the University has made such a commitment.
The estimated amount listed above seems to be adequate for most international students; however, these figures will vary accordingly to the student's living accommodations and individual money management. International students are not eligible for financial aid through the student loan programs. Students are, however, allowed to work on campus up to 20 hours while school is in session, and up to 40 hours during vacations and holidays. You should be aware, however, that on-campus work opportunities are extremely limited. Graduate students may contact their department advisor for information regarding graduate assistantships.
Estimated Expenses (2 Semesters)
Undergraduate | Graduate | |
---|---|---|
Tuition & Fees | $18,739 | $19,115 |
Room & Board | $8,387 | $8,387 |

If you will be coming with your spouse and/or children, you must also show proof of additional funds in the following amounts:
1 Dependent | $5,000 |
Each Additional Dependent | $1,500 |
A graduate student coming with a dependent spouse and two children, for example, would thus need to show proof of funds in the amount of $36,700 ($28,700+$5000+$1500+$1500). Be sure to notify admissions when submitting proof of funds if you will be coming with dependents. This will speed up the process for issuing your I-20 or DS-2019 after you are admitted.
