Equal Employment Opportunity Program

At Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) program is managed by the Office of Human Resources, Employee Relations Unit. WSSU is committed to fostering a workplace and educational environment that is free from discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. The University is dedicated to ensuring equal employment opportunity for all employees and applicants and administers its employment practices in accordance with applicable federal and state laws, UNC System policies, and University policies.

The program protects faculty, staff, and student-employees from harassment, retaliation, and discrimination based on protected statuses including race, religion, color, national origin, ethnicity, sex, pregnancy, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, political affiliation, National Guard or veteran status, genetic information or disability.

Reporting Concerns:

WSSU encourages individuals who believe they have experienced or witnessed discrimination, harassment, or retaliation to promptly report their concerns to the Office of Human Resources, Employee Relations Unit. The University is committed to reviewing all reports promptly, thoroughly, and impartially while maintaining confidentiality to the extent practicable and consistent with a fair investigation.

The procedures for reporting concerns, filing a complaint, and the University's investigative process are outlined in the EEO Complaint Reporting Unit Standard. The Standard describes the reporting process, investigative procedures, available resources, and the rights and responsibilities of individuals participating in the complaint process.

The University strictly prohibits retaliation against any individual who, in good faith, reports concerns, files a complaint, participates in an investigation, or otherwise engages in activity protected by applicable law or University policy.

EEODF Training:

In accordance with North Carolina General Statute § 126-16.1, all managers and supervisors in state agencies, including UNC system institutions, who were hired, promoted, or appointed on or after July 1, 1991, are required to complete the Equal Employment Opportunity and Diversity Fundamentals (EEODF) training course. This training is a mandatory compliance requirement designed to ensure managers and supervisors are equipped to uphold state and university standards for equal employment opportunity and workplace diversity.

The EEODF training is designed to provide state government executives, managers, and supervisors with practical tools to lead an increasingly diverse workforce. It focuses on:

  • Understanding roles and responsibilities in managing a diverse team
  • Relevant laws, policies, and employment practices
  • Building cultural awareness and inclusive leadership skills

The Training Program Includes:

  • 6 Online learning modules

Supervisors and Managers should compete the EEODF curriculum within a year of their hire or promotion. For EEODF course registration questions, contact Janet Carlson at carlsonj@wssu.edu or Brenda Livingston at livingstonbr@wssu.edu.
